Breadcrumb schema generator

Breadcrumb JSON-LD that
follows Google's docs.

Type your breadcrumb trail and copy valid BreadcrumbList JSON-LD, with the rules from Google's documentation applied.

Rules from Google's breadcrumb structured data page, read 7 October 2026. Runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere. It checks structure only: it does not check that the URLs exist, that they are crawlable, or whether Google will show breadcrumbs. It writes one trail per run. Test the live page in Google's Rich Results Test.

Related: which structured data Google still shows rich results for. Google breadcrumb structured data, as documented.

    How to use it

    1. 1
List the trail, one level per line

Write each level as "Name | https://full-url", from the top of the trail down to the current page. Positions are numbered for you, starting at 1, in the order you type.

    2. 2
Check the notes under the output

The tool flags a trail with fewer than two levels, a level with no name, a URL that is not a full http(s) address, and a middle level with no URL. The JSON is parsed back before it is shown, so what you copy is valid JSON.

    3. 3
Add it to the page, then test it

Paste the script block into the page the trail belongs to and check it with the Rich Results Test. The trail must match the breadcrumb visitors can see on the page.

    Questions

Which BreadcrumbList properties does Google require?

Google's breadcrumb documentation (read 7 October 2026) lists itemListElement on the BreadcrumbList, with at least two ListItem entries in order, and position, name and item on each ListItem. Position is the place in the trail, name is the text shown to users and item is the URL of the page that level stands for.

Does the last breadcrumb need a URL?

No. Google says: "If the breadcrumb is the last item in the breadcrumb trail, item is not required. If item isn't included for the last item, Google uses the URL of the containing page." Leave the last URL empty in the tool and it writes the last level with a name and position only.

Do I need to include the home page or the page itself?

Google says it is not required to include a ListItem for the top-level path (your site's domain or host name), nor for the page itself. Include them if your visible breadcrumb shows them.

Can a page have more than one breadcrumb trail?

Google says a page can specify several trails by putting several BreadcrumbList objects in an array in one script tag, for different paths to the same page. This tool writes one trail. Run it once per trail and combine the objects yourself if you need that.

Does breadcrumb markup guarantee breadcrumbs in search results?

No. Google says you must follow its guidelines to be eligible to appear with breadcrumbs, which is eligibility, not a promise. This tool cannot know what Google will show for your page.

Must the markup match the page?

Yes. Google's general structured data guidelines require markup to describe content visitors can see. Use the same levels and names as the breadcrumb on the page.

Is the output safe to paste into a page?

The output is built with JSON.stringify, and the angle-bracket and ampersand characters are written as \u escapes, so a name that contains a closing script tag cannot end the script block early. The JSON is parsed back and compared with what the tool built before it is shown.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser; the names and URLs you type are never sent anywhere.
