link and anchor text checker

Check what every link
actually says.

Paste a page or a post and see every link with its anchor text, destination and rel values, with likely problems marked. Nothing is fetched or uploaded.

These checks are guidance, not Google rules. The tool reads pasted HTML only: it cannot check whether links are live or broken, and links added by JavaScript are not listed.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Paste your HTML

Paste a whole page or just the part you care about, such as a post body. Optionally type your own domain so links can be labelled internal or external.

  2. 2
    Read the link list

Every link with an href is listed with its anchor text, its destination and its rel values. Flags mark generic anchors, empty anchors, links with no real destination and URLs that are linked with different anchor texts.

  3. 3
    Fix and re-paste

Make anchors describe where the link goes, give image links an alt text, replace placeholder hrefs with real URLs, then paste again.

Questions

What counts as a generic anchor?

Anchor text that says nothing about the destination on its own, such as "click here", "read more", "learn more", "here", "more", "link" or "this link". Screen reader users often browse a list of links out of context, where these are meaningless. Google also says descriptive link text helps it understand the linked page. This is guidance, not a rule that generic anchors are penalised.

Is an empty anchor always a problem?

A link with no visible text, no image alt text and no aria-label has no accessible name, so screen readers may read out the URL. Icon-only links need an aria-label or an image with alt text. The tool treats text, an image alt or an aria-label as a name.

Why is "#" or "javascript:" flagged?

An href of "#", an empty href or a javascript: URL does not point to a real page, so search engines have nothing to follow and the link can fail without JavaScript. A "#section" href is a valid link to a place in the same page and is labelled in-page, not flagged.

What do nofollow, sponsored and ugc mean?

They are rel values Google documents. nofollow is a hint not to pass ranking credit, sponsored marks paid or advertising links and ugc marks user-generated content links. The tool only reports which links carry them; it does not say which links should.

How are internal and external decided?

Only if you enter your domain. Relative links and links to that domain (or its subdomains) count as internal and everything else as external. Without a domain, links are labelled relative or absolute.

What does it not do?

It reads only the HTML you paste. It does not fetch the page or the linked URLs, so it cannot tell if a link is live or broken, redirects, or is blocked. Links added by JavaScript after load, and links without an href, are not listed. Input is limited to 500,000 characters and the first 500 links are listed.

Is my HTML sent anywhere?

No. Parsing happens in your browser. Pasted HTML is parsed as an inert document: scripts do not run, nothing is loaded and everything is shown as plain text.
