How to use it
- 1Paste your old and new URLs
One pair per line: the old URL or path, then the new one. Separate them with a space, a tab, a comma or an arrow (->). Old URLs can be paths (/old-page) or full URLs; new URLs can be paths or https:// URLs.
- 2Pick the status and check the warnings
Use 301 or 308 for a permanent move and 302 or 307 for a temporary one. Lines that cannot be turned into a safe rule are skipped with a reason, and duplicates, chains and loops are flagged.
- 3Copy the rules for your server
Paste the block for Apache, nginx, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages (_redirects), or Vercel into your config, deploy, then test several old URLs in a browser or with curl -I.
Questions
Which status code should I use?
301 (moved permanently) and 308 (permanent, keeps the request method) are for URLs that have moved for good; search engines then treat the new URL as the replacement. 302 (found) and 307 (temporary, keeps the method) are for short-term moves. For a normal page move, 301 is the usual choice.
Why are some of my lines skipped?
Rules are written into config files, so the tool only accepts a strict set of characters: letters, digits and - . _ ~ / % @ , = & in old paths, plus : ? + in new URLs. Spaces, quotes, semicolons, braces, backslashes, $, # and non-ASCII characters are rejected, because in a config file they could end a rule or start another one. Percent-encode such characters (for example %20 for a space) and paste the line again.
What does "exact match" change?
Apache's plain Redirect directive matches a path prefix, so Redirect 301 /blog /news also moves /blog/post to /news/post. Ticking "match the exact path only" writes RedirectMatch rules with an anchored pattern instead. nginx location = rules, _redirects and Vercel rules are already exact.
What are chains and loops?
A chain is when a rule's new URL is itself the old URL of another rule (A to B to C). Visitors and crawlers then go through extra hops, so point A straight at C. A loop (A to B to A) never ends and the rules in it are left out of the output. The tool can only spot chains between the rules you paste; it cannot see redirects already on your server.
What does the tool not do?
It does not test your live redirects or fetch any URL, so test a few after you deploy. It does not match query strings: anything after ? or # in an old URL is dropped with a warning. Trailing slashes (/page and /page/), upper and lower case, and how the query string is passed on to the new URL differ between servers and are not handled for you. Input is capped at 500 lines.
Which format is Cloudflare?
Cloudflare Pages reads the same _redirects file format as Netlify, so use that block. Cloudflare's dashboard redirect rules and Bulk Redirects use their own forms, which this tool does not write.
Is my list sent anywhere?
No. Everything is built in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored.
