image alt text checker

Check every image
has something to say.

Paste a page or a post and see every image with its alt text, with the likely problems marked. Nothing is fetched or uploaded.

These checks look at the text only and are guidance, not Google rules. The tool cannot see the images, so it cannot tell whether the alt text describes them. It reads pasted HTML only: images added by JavaScript, CSS backgrounds and inline SVG are not listed.

    How to use it

    1. 1
      Paste your HTML

Paste the whole page or just the part with the images: the source of a post, a template, or the output of your editor.

    2. 2
      Read the list

Every img element is listed in order with its source and alt text. Flags mark a missing alt attribute, an empty alt to double-check, filename-like alt text, long alt text and alt text that starts with "image of" or "picture of".

    3. 3
      Fix and re-paste

Describe what the image shows, in your own words, in the context of the page. Mark purely decorative images with an empty alt. Then paste again to check.

    Questions

    Why does alt text matter?

Alt text is read aloud by screen readers, shown when an image fails to load, and used by search engines to understand what an image is about. Good alt text is mainly an accessibility practice. It is not a ranking trick.

    Is an empty alt wrong?

No. An empty alt attribute (alt="") is the correct way to mark a purely decorative image so screen readers skip it. That is why the tool labels empty alt as "check it is decorative" and not as an error. A missing alt attribute is different: the reader may announce the file name instead.

How long should alt text be?

There is no official limit. A common guideline is to keep it under about 125 characters because some screen reader setups handle long alt text poorly. The tool flags longer alt text as guidance only, not a rule. Complex images such as charts can need a longer description in the page text.

Why avoid "image of" and "picture of"?

Screen readers already announce that the element is an image, so starting alt text with "image of" repeats it. It is a style guideline, not an error, and it is flagged only as a suggestion.

Can the tool tell if my alt text is good?

No. It checks the shape of the text only: whether it is missing, empty, looks like a file name, is long, or starts with a filler phrase. It cannot see the image, so it cannot judge whether the text describes it accurately. Only a person can.

    What does it not cover?

Only img elements in the HTML you paste are read. Images added by JavaScript after the page loads, CSS background images, inline SVG and images inside other iframes are not seen. Lazy-load attributes such as data-src are shown as the source when src is missing. Input is limited to 500,000 characters and the first 300 images are listed.

    Is my HTML sent anywhere?

No. Parsing happens in your browser. Pasted HTML is parsed as an inert document: scripts do not run, images are not loaded and everything is shown as plain text.
