    How to use it

      Paste your page or draft

      Paste HTML (the whole page or just the body) or text with markdown headings such as # Title and ## Section. Plain text with no headings has nothing to check.

      Read the outline

      Each heading is listed in order, indented by level. Problems are flagged on the heading they belong to and summarised above the outline.

      Fix the structure in your page

      Make one clear H1, step down one level at a time, and give every heading some text. Then re-paste to check.

    Questions

    Does Google require exactly one H1?

    No. Google has said that multiple H1 elements are not a problem for ranking, and HTML allows them. One H1 per page is still a widely used convention because it keeps the outline easy to read for people and screen readers. This tool flags more than one H1 as guidance, not as a Google rule.

    Why do skipped levels matter?

    Going from H2 straight to H4 leaves a gap in the outline. Screen reader users often navigate by heading level, so gaps can be confusing. It is an accessibility and readability convention, not a ranking factor, and the tool flags it as guidance.

    What do the length warnings mean?

    Headings over 70 characters are flagged as a rough guide that they may be hard to scan. There is no official limit from search engines. Treat it as a prompt to tighten the wording, not a rule.

    Do headings help rankings?

    Headings help search engines and readers understand how a page is organised, but a tidy outline alone does not make a page rank. Content quality and relevance matter far more.

    What input is supported?

    HTML with h1 to h6 elements, or markdown with # headings (ATX style, up to six #). Setext headings (underlined with === or ---) are not detected. Headings inside fenced code blocks are ignored in markdown mode. Input is limited to 500,000 characters.

    Is my content sent anywhere?

    No. Parsing happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or fetched. Pasted HTML is parsed as an inert document: its scripts do not run and its content is shown only as plain text.

    Can it check a live URL?

    No. It only reads what you paste. Headings added by JavaScript after load will not appear unless you paste the rendered HTML.
