Googlebot log analyzer
What did Googlebot
get back?
Paste access-log lines and see what Googlebot got back: status codes, days and the exact URLs that returned redirects and errors. Claimed hits only, nothing uploaded.
What Google says
Free, no account, nothing leaves your browser.
How to use it
- 1Paste access-log lines
Copy lines from your web server access log in the combined format used by default by Apache and Nginx (IP, date, request, status, size, referrer, user agent). Up to 2 MB. Filter the log to the days you care about first, for example with grep, so the paste stays small.
- 2Check the user-agent word
The tool counts lines whose user agent contains "Googlebot" (not case-sensitive). Change the word to look at another crawler, such as bingbot.
- 3Read the status breakdown
You get the claimed hits by status code and by day, and the URLs that returned redirects, 4xx and 5xx errors, most-hit first, to take to your developers or to the Search Console Crawl stats report.
Questions
Are these really Googlebot hits?
Not necessarily, and the tool does not claim so. The user-agent header is text that any client can send. Google's documentation says to verify a crawler with a reverse DNS lookup on its IP address followed by a forward lookup, or by checking the IP against the ranges Google publishes. This page only reads the log text: it makes no DNS requests and has no copy of Google's IP ranges. The IP count is shown so you can verify a sample yourself, then see our Googlebot verification page, linked here.
Which log format does it read?
The combined log format: IP, identity, user, [date], "METHOD /path PROTOCOL", status, bytes, "referrer", "user agent". The common format has no user agent, so such lines are counted but cannot be matched. Custom formats, JSON logs, CDN logs and compressed files are not read; lines that do not match are counted as unreadable.
What do the status codes mean for Google?
Google documents how it handles each class: 2xx can be passed to indexing, 3xx are followed as redirects, 4xx tell Google the content is not there (and, apart from 429, are not treated as a server problem), and 5xx and 429 can make Google slow down its crawling. See Google's status code page, linked here. A 404 on a URL you deleted on purpose is normal; a 404 on a URL in your sitemap or internal links is worth fixing.
Does it show crawl budget?
No. It counts the lines you paste, which is a sample unless you paste the whole period. Google's crawl budget guidance is aimed mainly at very large sites, so use the counts to spot errors and wasted requests, not to judge a budget.
Why might the Search Console numbers differ?
Search Console's Crawl stats report is Google's own record of requests it made, while a log holds whatever reached your server, including cached or CDN-served responses and requests from fake crawlers. The two will rarely match exactly.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The log lines are read by JavaScript in your browser, which does not send them anywhere. IP addresses in logs can count as personal data, which is one more reason to keep the analysis local.
