hreflang generator
Tell Google which
language is which.
List your language versions once and copy the full set of hreflang tags to paste into each page.
Free, no account, nothing leaves your browser.
How to use it
- 1List every language version
One line per version: a language code (en, fr, de-CH, pt-BR) and the full URL of that version. Include the page you are on.
- 2Choose an x-default
Pick the version shown to visitors whose language you do not cover, often your main or language-selector page. It is optional but recommended by Google.
- 3Paste the tags in every version
Every language version must list all the versions, itself included, and each must point back to the others. Copy the tags into the head of each page.
Questions
What is hreflang?
hreflang is an annotation that tells search engines which language (and optionally region) a page is for, and where the other language versions of the same page are, so searchers can be shown the right one.
Do all pages need to link to each other?
Yes. Google documents that hreflang annotations must be reciprocal: if page A lists page B, page B must list page A, and each page should list itself. Missing return links are the most common mistake.
Which codes are valid?
A language code (ISO 639-1, like en or fr), optionally followed by a region (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2, like US or CH), for example en-GB or pt-BR. The special value x-default marks the fallback page. The tool checks the shape of each code but cannot tell whether a code is the right one for your audience.
Can I use hreflang in the sitemap or HTTP header instead?
Yes. Google supports link tags in the page head, HTTP headers and sitemap entries. This tool outputs head link tags; use only one method per page group so they cannot contradict each other.
Is hreflang a ranking factor?
It is a hint for showing the right language version, not a way to rank higher. It does not translate content, and Google can ignore it if it conflicts with other signals.
Does this tool fetch my pages?
No. It only builds the tags from what you type, in your browser. It cannot check that your URLs exist or link back.
