HTTP header checker

What do your
headers say?

Paste the response headers from curl or your browser and see the status, the redirect chain, the X-Robots-Tag rules and any Link header canonical or hreflang.

A reading of the pasted text against Google's documentation, not Google's own parser. It does not request any URL, so it shows what you pasted, not what Googlebot receives. Nothing is uploaded.

What Google says

"By default, Google's crawlers follow up to 10 redirect hops."

"In the case of Google Search, Google doesn't index URLs that return a 4xx status code, and URLs that are already indexed and return a 4xx status code are removed from the index."

"Do not show this page, media, or resource in search results." (about noindex)

"you can use a link HTTP response header with a rel="canonical" target attribute."

Quoted from Google's HTTP status codes page, robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag page and canonical URL page, read on 2026-10-07. Google can change them, so treat those pages as the final word. More: Google's HTTP status codes, robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag directives, redirect types.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Copy the response headers

In a terminal run curl -sIL https://example.com/page to see every response in a redirect chain, or copy the response headers from the Network tab of your browser's developer tools. Paste them in, status lines included.

  2. 2
    Read each response

For every response the tool shows the status with what Google documents about it, any redirect target, each X-Robots-Tag rule split into directives, and the canonical and hreflang values found in a Link header.

  3. 3
    Fix at the source

Headers are set by your server, CDN or CMS. The tool reads only what you paste, so it cannot say what Google received on its own crawl. Test the live URL in Search Console to see that.

Questions

What does it check?

The status code of each response and what Google documents about that class of code; the Location of each redirect, the number of hops and repeated targets; every X-Robots-Tag header, with an optional user agent prefix, split into directives, with unknown directives, bad values and conflicts flagged; and Link headers with rel="canonical" or hreflang values, including relative canonical URLs and two different canonicals.

Where do the rules come from?

From Google's pages on HTTP status codes and network errors, on redirects, on the robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag, and on canonical URLs, summarised on our reference pages for each. The two quoted blocks above the tool are Google's own wording; the notes in the results are short paraphrases of those pages.

Which X-Robots-Tag directives does it know?

The ones on Google's page: all, noindex, nofollow, none, nosnippet, indexifembedded, max-snippet, max-image-preview, max-video-preview, notranslate, noimageindex and unavailable_after. Anything else is flagged as not listed there. Other search engines document other values, so an unknown directive may be meant for them.

How are conflicting rules handled?

Google says that when robots rules conflict, the more restrictive rule applies. The tool points out common conflicts, such as noindex with all, or nosnippet with max-snippet, but does not try to compute Google's final decision for every combination.

Does it see the headers my site really sends?

Only what you paste. Servers can return different headers depending on the user agent, the URL, caching or a CDN, so a header copied from a browser may differ from what Googlebot gets. The tool never makes a request.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Everything runs as JavaScript in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Remove cookies and tokens from pasted headers anyway: the tool ignores them, but they do not need to be on your clipboard.
