Redirect map checker

Is your redirect map
clean?

Paste your old-to-new URL list and see the loops, chains and conflicts before you ship it, with a flattened map that points every URL at its final destination.

A reading of the pasted pairs, not a crawl. It does not request any URL, so it shows how your list links together, not what your server returns. Nothing is uploaded.

What Google says

"we advise redirecting to the final destination directly."

"Redirecting URLs is the practice of resolving an existing URL to a different one, effectively telling your visitors and Google Search that a page has a new location."

"Google Search uses certain types of redirects as a signal that the redirect target should be canonical."

Quoted from Google's site move with URL changes page and redirects page, read on 2026-10-07. Google can change them, so treat those pages as the final word. More: site moves with URL changes, redirect types, HTTP status codes.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Paste your redirect map

One redirect per line: the old URL, then the new URL, separated by a tab, a comma, an arrow (-> or =>) or spaces. Lines starting with # are ignored. A third column that is a status code such as 301 is read and kept.

  2. 2
Add your origin if you mix paths and full URLs

If some lines use /old-path and others use https://example.com/old-path, type your site origin so both forms are matched. Leave it blank if every line uses the same form.

  3. 3
Fix the flagged lines, then copy the flattened map

The tool lists loops, self redirects, repeated and conflicting sources and chains. The flattened map points every source straight at its final destination, ready to paste back into your server or CMS.

Questions

What does it flag?

A line that redirects to itself; a loop (A to B to A); a chain, where a target is itself redirected, with the number of hops and the final destination; the same source listed twice, as an exact repeat or with conflicting targets; a source or target with a # fragment, which browsers never send to the server; a line that cannot be read as two URLs; and a chain of more than 10 hops.

What does Google say about chains?

Google's site move guidance advises redirecting to the final destination directly. It says Googlebot can follow up to 10 hops, and that if chains are unavoidable you should keep them short, ideally no more than 3 and fewer than 5. The flattened map follows that advice by removing the middle steps.

Does it know which redirects are live?

No. It only reads the pairs you paste and never requests a URL, so it cannot see the status codes, redirect types or chains your server really returns. Check a few live URLs with the HTTP header checker or curl -sIL, and test them in Search Console.

Does the redirect type matter?

Yes, to Google: permanent redirects such as 301 and 308 are used as a signal that the target should be canonical, temporary ones such as 302 and 307 are not. The tool keeps a status code column if you give one and shows it, but it does not decide which type you should use. See Google's redirect page, linked on this page.

How are URLs compared?

Exactly, after trimming spaces and, if you gave an origin, turning matching absolute URLs into paths. Case, trailing slashes and query strings count, because servers can treat them as different URLs. /Old and /old are different keys; so are /old and /old/.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Everything runs as JavaScript in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
