Sitemap diff checker

What changed in your
sitemap?

Paste an old and a new sitemap and see exactly which URLs appeared, which disappeared and which lastmod dates changed. Nothing is fetched or uploaded.

A comparison of the two texts you paste, not a crawl. It does not request any URL, so it cannot tell what your server returns for an added or removed URL. Nothing is uploaded.

What Google says

Sitemap limits, formats and the role of lastmod are on Google's build and submit a sitemap page. Read our summary of the rules at Google's sitemap rules, and see what Search Console reports at the Sitemaps report. Google can change its pages, so treat them as the final word.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Paste the old sitemap

Open the sitemap.xml from before your change (a saved copy, a staging export or an older deploy) and paste the XML, or paste one URL per line. Up to 2 MB per box.

  2. 2
    Paste the new sitemap

Paste the current sitemap the same way. A sitemap index is not followed: paste one child sitemap per side.

  3. 3
    Read what changed

You get the URLs that are only in the new sitemap, the URLs that are only in the old one, and the URLs whose lastmod changed. Copy any list, for example to check the removed URLs for redirects.

Questions

What does it compare?

The loc value of every entry, exactly as written after trimming spaces. A URL in the new sitemap that is not in the old one is "added"; the reverse is "removed". If both sides have a lastmod for the same URL and the two values differ, it is listed as a lastmod change.

Why is a URL shown as both added and removed?

Because the strings differ. Case, a trailing slash, http versus https, www versus non-www and query strings all count, since servers can treat them as different URLs. Look for pairs that differ only in one of these: they usually mean a canonical URL change in how the sitemap is generated.

What should I do with removed URLs?

It depends on why they went. If the page moved, it should redirect to its new location; if it was deleted on purpose, it should return a 404 or 410 status. Google's sitemap documentation says a sitemap is a hint about which URLs you want crawled, and the tool cannot tell you what your server returns for them. Use the HTTP header checker or the URL Inspection tool.

Does an added URL get indexed?

Not necessarily. A sitemap tells Google about a URL; it does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

What input can it read?

A sitemap urlset with url and loc elements, or plain text with one URL per line (lines starting with # are ignored). Input with a DOCTYPE or ENTITY declaration is refused rather than parsed. Compressed .gz files cannot be pasted.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Both sitemaps are compared by JavaScript in your browser. Nothing is fetched and nothing is sent to a server.
