CTR by position

Your own CTR
curve by position

Paste a Search Console export and see how many impressions and clicks your site gets at each average position, and the CTR that results.

Your data, not a benchmark. Positions are averages, so one query can sit between buckets. Use the table to compare the buckets of your own site, not to judge it against a published CTR curve.

Reads up to 50,000 rows. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded. The sample is made-up example data, not from a real site.

Same export, other questions: low CTR finder · branded vs non-branded queries · striking distance keyword finder · content decay finder. What the columns mean, in Google's words: Search Console Performance report. All free tools

Free, no account, nothing leaves your browser.

How to use it

  1. 1
    Paste your Search Console export

Export the Performance report with queries (or pages) as CSV, or copy the table. You need Clicks, Impressions and Position columns plus a Query or Page column. Comma, semicolon and tab separators are detected.

  2. 2
    Read the seven buckets

Each query (or page) is placed in a bucket by its average position: 1, 2, 3, 4-5, 6-10, 11-20 or 21+. For every bucket you get the number of rows, total impressions, total clicks and CTR.

  3. 3
    Compare against your own baseline

The point is your own curve: how fast does CTR fall on your site as position gets worse, and where is a bucket far below its neighbours? Look at those rows with the low CTR finder.

Questions

How are the buckets decided?

Rows with the same query (or page) are merged first, with the position averaged and weighted by impressions. The average is then rounded to the nearest whole position: below 1.5 is bucket 1, 1.5 up to 2.5 is bucket 2, 2.5 up to 3.5 is bucket 3, 3.5 up to 5.5 is 4-5, 5.5 up to 10.5 is 6-10, 10.5 up to 20.5 is 11-20 and anything lower is 21+.

Is this the real CTR for each position?

No. Search Console reports an average position per query, so a query that sometimes shows at 2 and sometimes at 8 lands in a middle bucket. The table describes your own export for the period you pasted, not what any position earns in general.

How is CTR calculated?

Total clicks divided by total impressions in the bucket, not the mean of each row's CTR. A bucket full of rare queries is therefore dominated by its high-impression rows.

What file do I need?

A CSV or tab-separated table with a Query or Page column and Clicks, Impressions and Position columns (Average position is accepted). A CTR column is not needed. Quoted fields and numbers such as "1,200" or 12,5 are handled.

How many rows can it read?

Up to 50,000 data rows. Rows beyond that are ignored and the tool tells you so. Search Console's own exports are limited, so a very large site sees a sample of its queries.

Is my data uploaded?

No. The text is parsed by JavaScript in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. The CSV you download is built in the browser too.
