    How to use it

      Paste your URLs

      One full URL per line, all on the same site. Only pages you want in search results belong in a sitemap.

      Optionally add a last-modified date

      Use today's date only if the pages really changed. Leave it empty if you are not sure: a wrong date is worse than none.

      Download sitemap.xml

      Upload it to your site root, add a Sitemap: line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

    Questions

    What is a sitemap.xml?

    A sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs of your site that you want search engines to find. It helps discovery, especially for new or poorly linked pages, but it does not guarantee that a page is crawled or indexed.

    How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

    Google documents a limit of 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per sitemap file. Above that, split it into several sitemaps and list them in a sitemap index. This tool warns you when you go over 50,000.

    Do I need priority and changefreq?

    No. Google has said it ignores priority and changefreq, so this tool leaves them out. Only the URL and an accurate last-modified date are useful.

    Should every page be in the sitemap?

    No. List canonical, indexable pages that return 200. Leave out redirects, noindex pages, duplicates and parameter variations.

    Where do I put the file?

    At the root of the site, for example https://example.com/sitemap.xml, then reference it in robots.txt with a Sitemap: line and submit it in Search Console. The free robots.txt and sitemap checker can confirm it loads.

    Does this tool crawl my site?

    No. It only formats the list you paste, in your browser. It does not check that the URLs exist.
