robots meta generator

Control indexing
page by page.

Pick the directives, copy the robots meta tag, the per-bot variants and the matching HTTP header with Apache and nginx snippets. Nothing is fetched or uploaded.

Indexing and links

A noindex only works if the page can be crawled: do not block it in robots.txt. Test your rules with the robots.txt and sitemap checker. When directives conflict, the most restrictive one applies. Directives are those documented by Google Search Central; other search engines differ.

    How to use it

    1. 1
      Choose what to restrict

Tick the directives you need, such as noindex or nosnippet, and set the snippet and preview limits if you want them. Leave everything empty for the defaults: indexable and followable.

    2. 2
Copy the tag or the header

Use the meta tag in the head of an HTML page. For PDFs, images and other files that have no head, send the same directives as an X-Robots-Tag HTTP header with the Apache or nginx snippet.

    3. 3
      Check it is actually crawlable

A noindex only works if Google can fetch the page. Make sure robots.txt does not block it, then test the live URL, for example with the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.

    Questions

Which directives does this tool write?

Only ones documented by Google Search Central: noindex, nofollow, noarchive, nosnippet, noimageindex, max-snippet, max-image-preview, max-video-preview and unavailable_after. Other search engines support different sets, so check their documentation before relying on a directive there.

    Why is my noindex ignored?

The most common cause is a robots.txt rule that blocks the page. Google then never fetches the page, never sees the noindex, and may still list the URL. Let the page be crawled, and remove the Disallow rule, so the noindex can be read. You can check your rules with the robots.txt and sitemap checker.

    What happens when directives conflict?

Google documents that when directives conflict, the most restrictive one applies. For example, nosnippet wins over a max-snippet value, and a page-level noindex wins over anything that allows indexing. Tags for a specific bot, such as googlebot, are combined with the general robots tag in the same way.

    Meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header?

They carry the same directives. The meta tag only works in HTML. The header works for any file type, including PDFs and images, and can be set for many files at once in server config.

Do I need to write index and follow?

No. Indexing and following are the default, so index and follow add nothing. Add them only if you want the tag to say so explicitly; the tool offers that as an option.

    How does unavailable_after work?

It asks Google to stop showing the page in results after a date and time. Google documents a widely adopted date format such as ISO 8601; this tool writes the date you pick as midnight UTC. Removal happens after the date, not instantly, because Google must recrawl the page.

Does it check my live page?

No. It builds the tags from your choices in the browser. It does not fetch your site, and it cannot tell you which directives your page already sends. Nothing is uploaded.
