How to use it

Paste HTML or Markdown
Paste page HTML (h1 to h6 elements) or a Markdown document (lines starting with #). Headings inside code blocks, comments, script and style are ignored.

Pick levels and format
Choose the first and last heading level to include, a bulleted or numbered list, and HTML or Markdown output. Repeated headings get -1, -2 suffixes so every link points to one place.

Check the ids on your page
A link only works if the heading has the same id. For HTML input the tool also gives you the headings with ids added; for Markdown, many renderers create matching ids themselves, but not all do, so test the links.

Questions

Does a table of contents help rankings?

We make no ranking claim and have not found a Google statement that a table of contents improves rankings. It is a navigation aid for readers, and it gives each section a stable link you can share.

How are the ids made?

The heading text is lowercased, tags and Markdown formatting are removed, characters other than letters, numbers, spaces and hyphens are dropped, and spaces become hyphens. A heading that already has an id in your HTML keeps it. This is similar to the way GitHub builds anchors, but different renderers differ in small details, so test the links where you publish.

Will the links work in my Markdown renderer?

Only if that renderer adds ids to headings the same way. GitHub does; some static site generators and editors need a plugin or a setting; some use different rules for punctuation and accents. The tool cannot see your renderer, so check one link after publishing.

What happens with two headings that have the same text?

The first keeps the plain slug and later ones get -1, -2 and so on, which is the common convention. If you paste HTML with duplicate ids already in it, the tool keeps them as written and tells you.

Does it change my HTML?

Only in the extra output: "Headings with ids added" is a copy of your HTML with id attributes added to headings that did not have one. Your pasted text is not modified or sent anywhere.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything runs in JavaScript in your browser.
