Questions

Does a video need its own page to show up in Google?

Google says that to be eligible for video features, including video results on the main results page and Video mode, you should create a dedicated watch page for each video, if it makes sense for your business. It also says a video embedded on another page, such as a blog post, can still appear as a text result or image result with a video badge, but a page that mainly reviews or surrounds the video is not a watch page.

Does indexing the page index the video?

No. Google says just because the watch page is indexed doesn't mean the video will also be indexed, and that the watch page must be indexed (and performing well in Search) for the video to be considered.

Do I need a video sitemap or structured data?

Google says it supports structured data, video sitemaps and the Open Graph protocol, and recommends providing metadata about the video. The page we read does not say any one of these is required.

Will adding VideoObject markup guarantee a video result?

No. Google says it doesn't guarantee that adding markup will result in a specific video feature in Search results.

What if my video is hosted on YouTube or Vimeo?

Google says it may index the video on both your page and the platform's page, and that both may appear in video features if they meet the indexing criteria. For features that need the video file, Google says to check that your video host allows Google to fetch the file.

Can I block Google from using key moments?

Google says the nosnippet meta tag opts out of the key moments feature completely. Check the linked page for what nosnippet also does to your regular snippets before using it.
